212mph Corvette ZR1 convertible revealed
The Corvette ZR1 convertible boasts a top speed of 212mphNew exhaust setting allows for almost unrestricted airflow, ensuring owners can enjoy the roof-down experience
The Corvette ZR1 convertible has been revealed, powered by the same 745bhp, 715lb ft, 6.2-litre supercharged V8 as the coupé.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed manual or an optional eight-speed paddle-shift automatic gearbox. The ZR1 has never been sold with a paddle-shift option before. Top speed is rated at 212mph, with a so-called Low Wing being deployed to generate downforce at high speeds.
Buyers can spec a Performance Package, which includes an exaggerated front splitter, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, magnetic ride control and a High Wing, which generates 430kg of downforce at the cost of some aerodynamic efficiency. Corvette says the pack will improve track times, but its fitment does slightly reduce the ZR1 convertible’s top speed.
Corvette claims that the ZR1’s aluminium chassis means that the convertible didn’t need substantially re-working from the coupe, with the challenges of accommodating the folding roof and repositioning the seat belt mounts being relatively easy. The roof structure adds 27kg of extra weight, however.
The ZR1 convertible's exhaust also features four modes, one of which is said to put the car in contention for the title of having the world's loudest exhaust note. The four settings are Stealth, which is quieter even than a standard Z06, Tour, Sport and Track, which is significantly louder than standard. When Track is engaged a spring-loaded passive valve closes to allow almost unrestricted exhaust flow.
The ZR1 convertible will cost from $123,995 (£92,500) when it goes on sale in spring 2018 - a rise over the coupe’s $119,995 (£89,500). Neither is planned to be sold in the UK.
