Toyota becomes latest car maker to offer scrappage scheme

Toyota is now offering up to £4000 of savings when trading in cars more than seven years' old

Toyota is the latest car maker to launch a scrappage scheme in the UK, following in the footsteps of manufacturers such as Ford and Hyundai.

The initiative offers savings of up to £4000 when trading in any Toyota model more than seven years’ old and owned by a customer for at least six months.

The biggest saving of £4000 can be achieved on a Land Cruiser, while the lowest saving of £1000 is for the C-HR and C-HR hybrid. Toyota’s well-known Prius Hybrid has a saving of £2000. The full list of savings on individual models is below.

When asked why greener cars such as the Prius and C-HR Hybrid did not offer as big savings as some other models on the scheme, Toyota told Autocar that it had focused its investment on smaller models because it knows "from previous scrappage schemes that this is where the majority of transactions are likely to be. Hence better deals on Yaris and Auris hybrid in comparison [to Prius or C-HR Hybrid]."

The scheme starts tomorrow and continues until the end of the year.

Toyota said the discounts allow people “to change their older, higher-emissions vehicles for a brand new Toyota, including the widest range of petrol-electric hybrids on the market”.

Paul Van der Burgh, Toyota's UK boss, added: “Our scrappage scheme is a win-win solution. Motorists can dispose of their older vehicles and have access to our cleaner, more efficient model range.

“Our world-leading petrol-electric hybrids will be an ideal choice, helping make a genuine contribution to protecting air quality – a crucial concern for today’s customers.

“What’s more, everyone who takes up our scrappage scheme can be assured their vehicle will be disposed of in an environmentally responsible fashion that maximises recycling opportunities.”

Earlier this month, Ford announced its own scrappage scheme, which offers a discount of £2000 across the board for new models when replacing cars and vans sold up to 2010. In that initiative, the saving sits alongside existing deals. For example, Ford is already offering £2000 off a Kuga, so buyers would get a total saving of £4000 when buying that model.

Other car makers offering similar schemes in the UK include Hyundai, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The introduction of manufacturer scrappage schemes has snowballed as negativity surrounding older diesel vehicles continues. The initiatives encourage owners to get rid of older, more polluting vehicles to move into newer, cleaner models. All of the schemes announced so far include both petrol and diesel models.

However, sceptics claim the move is largely an opportunity for manufacturers to sell more cars.
