This week: New Porsche 911 revealed, second-gen Range Rover Evoque driven, 70th anniversary special, and much more
Porsche earned a place on this week’s cover with the all-new 992-generation 911, which was revealed at the LA motor show. It gains some evolutionary styling on the familiar 911 shape, along with a heavily revised range of six-cylinder turbo petrol engines. We’ve got all the facts and figures, as well as what to expect from the upcoming GT3 variant.
Land Rover also made a dent in this week’s news section with the second-generation Evoque. The compact SUV becomes the first in the range to launch with a mild hybrid engine, and is a sign of things to come from the brand. We’ve already driven one off-road, too.
We also report on the R1T, an electric pick-up truck from startup Rivian that threatens a Tesla-beating zero emissions range, and Honda’s Urban EV has been spotted testing on public roads for the first time.

Reviews
The sharper, faster and generally more hardcore Trophy variant of Renault’s Megane R.S. hot hatch gets driven for the first time this week. It delivers more power, lighter wheels and a freer-breathing exhaust that turn up the wick on the already rapid R.S. Is that enough to best rivals like the Honda Civic Type R and Hyunai i30 N?
We also drive the Mercedes B-Class to find out if the all-new high-rise compact hatch is a real alternative to an A-Class to those looking for a taller car. Elsewhere, we give Suzuki’s reborn Jimny compact off-roader the full road test treatment to see if it’s suited to the road as well as mud.

Features
2018 has been something of a 70th birthday special for the motoring world, as Porsche, Lotus and Land Rover all celebrate the impressive milestone. We marked the occasion over a massive 27 pages and six features. We took Land Rover’s most metropolitan model yet, the Range Rover Velar, on an unforgettable pilgrimage to the brand’s spiritual home, the remote Scottish island of Islay. The latest Discovery took on an off-road course against an original Series One to see what 70 years of off-road experience can do, and narrowed down a list of the ten best used Land Rovers you can buy.
Looking back through seven decades of cars to determine what made Porsche such an iconic company, Andrew Frankel picked the best of the breed and explains exactly what makes each one so special.
Elsewhere, Autocar’s testers describe their greatest ever drives behind the wheel of a Lotus as we look back on how the company got started, where it helped out other brands, which models didn’t quite hit the mark, and what to expect from the next 70 years from the quintessentially British sports car company.

Opinions
Steve Cropley continues his car buying binge this week, putting his name down for a Hyundai Kona Electric to join the recently acquired VW California. He also discusses the continuing Ghosn drama and opines on the perils of lost car keys. Matt Prior, meanwhile, argues what makes someone “a car person” is all rather subjective, really.

Deals
What better way to celebrate Lotus’ 70th anniversary than adding one to your garage? Our latest Used Car Buying Guide explains what to look for when considering a pre-owned Exige S2. Bangernomics talks inside knowledge, asking car dealers what cars they spend their own hard-earned cash on, and a Lotus Elise S1 is the standout choice from this week’s trawl through the classifieds.
