McLaren 600LT revealed as new top Sports Series model

McLaren 600LT Faster and more focused 592bhp version of 570S follows the formula laid down by the 675LT and F1 GTR Longtail

McLaren has applied its ‘Longtail’ formula to the 570S to create the 600LT, the fastest and most focused model in the company's Sports Series range.

Using a higher specification version of the 570S’s twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 engine, the 600LT produces 592bhp and 457lb ft, which are gains of 30bhp and 14lb ft. No performance figures have been released, but expect a noticeable improvement the 570S’s 0-62mph time of 3.2sec.

The car benefits from a 96kg weight reduction largely thanks to a more extensive use of carbonfibre for the bodywork. Weight has also been saved with a new exhaust system, which is shorter than the one fitted to the McLaren Senna and helps to reduce backpressure. The fitment of the same carbonfibre seats that first came with the P1 further cut mass.

As suggested by its links to the first Longtail McLaren, the F1 GTR of 1997, the 600LT grows in length by 74mm due to extended rear bodywork. This change, first introduced with the F1 GTR to enhance the aerodynamics of the Le Mans racing version, includes with a larger rear diffuser and fixed rear wing on the new car. There is also a new front splitter and different side sills.

There are changes to the car’s chassis as well, with forged aluminium double wishbone suspension and a lightweight braking system taken from the Super Series platform (which underpins the 650S), along with stickier Pirelli Trofeo R tyres. The 600LT also uses firmer engine mounts and a quicker steering rack, and it offers faster throttle and brake responses.

Customers wanting to further increase the 600LT’s diet can swap the P1-derived seats for even lighter carbonfibre seats first used in the Senna.

McLaren Special Operations provides buyers with the option of further enhancing performance with additions such as a carbonfibre roof and vented carbonfibre front wings. Add all of the lightest options to the car and its dry weight drops to 1247kg, which is 110kg lighter than the 570S.

Production for the 600LT begins in October, with prices starting at £185,500 – £36,500 more than the 570S. The 600LT will be strictly limited in production, however, with sales only running for 12 months. The price of the car includes a Pure McLaren Road Owner Track Day at a circuit with driving tuition.
